The current state of waste surrounding us

89.5% ≠ 25.6%

This is the recycling rate of waste plastics in Japan and how it compares to international standards.

Japan's total waste discharge in FY2023 was 403 million tonnes (general waste: 38 million tonnes, industrial waste: 365 million tonnes). The proportion of industrial waste that is recycled is reported to be 54.7%, which includes not only material and chemical recycling, which is our goal, but also "thermal recycling" (heat recovery), in which the heat generated during incineration is used as a secondary process, even though the waste is actually incinerated. The following categories are also included.

In the field of waste plastics, where the breakdown of material, chemical and thermal processing is announced, the effective utilisation rate is 89.5%, of which thermal recycling accounts for 63.8%.

Only in Japan is the generation of electricity or gas from incineration heat referred to as "recycling".

464 million tonnes

In the same year, food losses totalled 4.64 million tonnes (2.33 million tonnes from households and 2.31 million tonnes from businesses)

Some companies have a 100% recycling rate for food loss at their factories, or distribute approximately 17 tonnes of unused food collected in 11 days to each region through food bank activities, but the national recycling rate has not been announced, and approximately half of food loss generated is from households. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) is promoting an "eat up" campaign for consumers and a review of the one-third rule for food retailers.

ReLoop Japan will first propose and provide data on recycling for food loss, and then increase the variation of recycled materials in the future.
